In 9 CE, Wang Mang, a Confucian scholar and regent, seized the Han throne and launched a radical reform program that sounds startlingly modern: land redistribution, abolition of slavery, price controls, government loans, and a national currency overhaul. For centuries, historians dismissed him as a power-mad usurper; the Han shu calls him a 'treacherous minister.' But recent scholarship reveals a visionary who tried to solve the same problems of inequality, corruption, and land concentration that plagued the late Western Han. This episode explores Wang Mang's rise through the ranks of the imperial bureaucracy, his sweeping 'Wang Mang reforms,' and the cascade of disasters—floods, famines, peasant uprisings, and the Red Eyebrows rebellion—that toppled his Xin dynasty after only 14 years. We also look at how Wang Mang's legacy was deliberately distorted by the restored Han, and why he remains a controversial figure in Chinese historiography, sometimes compared to Mao Zedong or modern social engineers.
