Welcome to Above the Garage, a ”The Handmaid’s Tale” Podcast! In this podcast, our panel of ”expert” fans from across the world will discuss this brilliant TV show through topical ala carte episodes as well as an episode by episode analysis for both new and long-time fans. New episodes uploaded weekly!
Hi friends! Today we have a special topical episode for you guys. The many panelists on our podcast who have not yet had a chance to weigh in on the ending of the show have put together a series of episodes for you that we’re calling a Meta Mini-Series. This first episode is entitled, “Nick & June Final Character Analyses” and will, obviously, cover an in depth analysis of the characters of both Nicholas Blaine and June Osborne, from The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu.
From the pilot episode through the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale, the relationship between Nick and June has been an especially compelling storyline that has brought in, and maintained, many thousands of viewers. It was not just that relationship that kept us coming back though, but the individual characters of both of them that meant so much to us for so long. Listen as our friends from across the world not only provide an in depth analysis of these characters, but also share their personal journeys with them and this story that has finally come to a close after nearly a decade.
Please come back next week for a second episode in this Meta Mini-Series, and there will be at least one or two after that one as well, to wrap our years of podcasting The Handmaid’s Tale. And then we’ll be moving on to podcast a new show on this platform in the near future – we hope you stick around! Come follow us on Instagram at @tht_abovethegarage for that announcement and lots more content!
Hi friends...Here's our discussion of Episode 610 of The Handmaid's Tale. We will be back with a few more Meta episodes about specific topics on Handmaid's and then on to a new show, which we will announce soon! As always, thank you so much for listening.
Today, we have the hilarious and high honor of chatting with Bradley Whitford, who once again needs no introduction. But just for kicks…
Bradley plays recently promoted (though we prefer to say Knighted) High Commander Joseph Lawrence, the economic mind behind the origin of Gilead - but also the funniest Commander in the land. And happily, a man who found the inspiration in rebellious handmaids like Emily and June to be a better person in the end.
In addition to The Handmaid’s Tale, Bradley will probably already be very familiar to you after appearing in hit after hit on our screens for literal decades. From Adventures in Babysitting in the 80s to Billy Madison, Scent of a Woman, Philadelphia and so many more amazing films in the 90s to his iconic run on West Wing in the aughts, and on through today - he’s just never stopped absolutely crushing the assignment every chance he gets. Most importantly, be on the lookout for his latest turn in “For Worse,” written and created by his incredible wife, Amy Landecker!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 6, Episode 9. And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage
Hi friends…Here’s our discussion about Episode 609 of The Handmaid’s Tale. We’ll be back with a similar series finale discussion next week with Kimberley, Aubrey, and Kate - and then a follow up META episode for the rest of our group members to process the ending of this show.
And please check back very soon for a NEW show on THIS platform - we hope you stick with us to talk about new shows!! And please come find our extra content posted daily on Instagram at tht_abovethegarage!
Today, we have the unbelievable honor of chatting with Ann Dowd, yet another woman who absolutely requires no introduction!
But just for good measure, Ann plays Aunt Lydia Clements, the primary “Aunt” in the show, in charge of the management, care, and occasional torture of the handmaids. Ann’s portrayal of this complicated woman often takes her from moments of endearment to acts of violence in mere seconds on screen and she portrays each side of the spectrum (and everything in between) flawlessly and with such passion the audience is absolutely enraptured with her. She has won an Emmy for her performance of this role but perhaps the highest compliment for her portrayal is the fact that after seeing Ann as Lydia in the show, Margaret Atwood wrote a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale that largely focuses specifically on the character of Aunt Lydia. I’m not sure it gets more flattering than that. In addition to The Handmaid’s Tale, Ann has acted in so many beloved movies and television shows over the decades, from Green Card and Philadelphia in the 90s to Mass and The Leftovers more recently. She’s an absolute legend and we are so honored to have been granted her time and attention – she is the absolute LOVELIEST. We hope you enjoy it too.
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 6, Episode 8.

Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Elisabeth Moss, a woman who absolutely requires no introduction!
But just for good measure, Elisabeth (aka Lizzie) plays the star of the show, June Osborne, the primary “handmaid” referenced in the title - in all six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date and is Emmy nominated year after year for her performance of June. We love this badass heroine and the absolutely wonderful actress behind her more than we can tell you. So we really hope you enjoy our (lengthy!) chat as much as we did! It was truly an honor to spend such a long time with Lizzie, and we hope she comes back again after it’s all said and done so we can really talk about EVERYTHING.

Today we had the incredible pleasure of speaking with David Lester, who is many things on The Handmaid’s Tale, but most recently, the Director of Season 6, Episode 3.David has been with the show since Season 1, and has worn far too many hats to count, but we do our best to follow his route from 3rd AD of the first season to Director of Ep 3 of the final season, as he regales us with so many funny and fascinating tales along the way. When we conducted this interview in October, we had of course not seen his episode yet, but we have since and it’s incredible. As such, he has promised us he will come back for another interview after Season 6 is done and we intend to call him on it. In the meantime we know you will enjoy hearing from such a beloved and seasoned member of The Handmaid’s Tale crew.
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy David’s work so much, be sure to take a look at all the other shows in which you can see his work on IMDb! And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage
Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Yvonne Strahovski, a woman who needs no introduction!
But just for good measure, Yvonne plays Serena Joy Waterford in all six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date and absolutely crushes the nuances of playing a woman who does horrible things but somehow manages to pull the audience (and June) in and make you care about her time and again. Yvonne is simply brilliant in this role (and of course all the others she’s played along the years, from Dexter to the more recent Teacup and so many in between). We hope you enjoy our little chat as much as we did!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage
Today we had the great pleasure of speaking with Sean Scoffield, Graphic Designer on The Handmaid’s Tale.
Sean is the one of the primary masterminds behind the entire written language of Gilead, which is no small feat. In this unique dystopian society, Sean had the challenge of creating store fronts, store interiors, road signs and so much more without using a single word, because the handmaids aren’t allowed to read. He also designs the many logos of Gilead from the Eyes to Birthmobiles to Gilead’s recent fertility center in Season 5. But maybe our favorite graphic design project was the picture itinerary Serena was handed when she visited Toronto in Season 2. Once again, there is so much work that goes into the brilliant details that make this show what it is, and we learned about yet another fascinating job in that world today!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Sean’s work so much, be sure to take alook at all the other shows in which you can see his work on his IMDB! And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage
Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Max Minghella, fan favorite of our listeners!
Max plays Nick Blaine on The Handmaid's Tale, and is another character that's been on the show since Day One. Starting out as the Waterford driver, Nick quickly falls in love with June and they can't seem to quit each other to this day, despite his ascension to Commander and her escape to Canada. So of course we talk all things Nick & June and Nick & Lawrence, his other prominent (B)romance. We also spun off into completely unrelated topics like VCRs and the WWE! We had a great time just chatting with him in our trailer on set in October, and we hope you all enjoy the interview as much as we did.
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Max’s work so much, be on the lookout later this year for the release of his movie, "Shell," which incidentally also stars Elisabeth Moss, and many other well loved names. And keep an eye out next year for his new role in Season 4 of "Industry," which he's filming now. In the meantime, check out his IMDb to keep you busy until those come out! And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage
Today, we continue our On Set Interview Series by speaking with Glenn Hughes, Picture Car Coordinator on The Handmaid’s Tale! Once again, the show has found us an incredible human being with such a cool job for a new friend.
You see cars everywhere on screen, and they set the scene instantly so you know what decade you're working with - or in this case, that you're in a whole new, and wholly terrifying, dystopian society. But have you ever though about where and how they source an entire show's worth of cars? Glenn tells us all about that and so much more - we guarantee you'll be paying a lot more attention to these scene setting (and sometimes stealing) automobiles after this interview. In addition to all the Handmaid's cars (and a plane!), we discussed Stephen King's infamous Christine, Glenn's own recent purchase of his dream car, mani-pedis, and much much more. We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did!!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Glenn’s work so much, be sure to check out Fargo, 11.22.63, and his IMDB page to see all his other amazing work!
Today, we have the hilarious and unforgettable honor of chatting with Josh Charles, new to The Handmaid's Tale for Season 6!
Since Josh is brand new to The Handmaid's Tale this upcoming season, and we want to avoid any Season 6 spoilers, we don't delve into the specifics of his new character. Fear not though friends, as there is so much entertainment in his incredible career to date, spanning nearly 40 years of hits on screen - ranging all the way from 1989's Dead Poet's Society to Taylor Swift's 2024 music video for Fortnight. Not to mention his role as Max Peterson in Elisabeth Moss' latest spy thriller, The Veil. This conversation was had in a trailer on the set of The Handmaid's Tale in October and was the most fun and random free-for-all in which we have ever had the pleasure of participating. We hope you enjoy it a fraaaction as much as we did!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Josh’s work so much, be sure to check him out in other shows such as Dead Poet's Society, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (how did we forget to talk about that childhood classic!), Drunk History, Sports Night, The Good Wife, The Veil and so many more. Take a look at his IMDB page to see them all!And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage
Today, we continue our On Set Interview Series by speaking with John MacGillivray, Special Effects Coordinator on The Handmaid’s Tale! We went into this interview excited to hear the details behind all the explosions and fires and bombings in The Handmaid's Tale but ended up learning so much more. Special effects is all that, yes, but it's also creating the atmosphere in the colonies, the snow and rain and fog on screen, and just so many more important details that give the show the look and feel it's so famous for. John is the friendliest, most fascinating, and talented man (with yet another incredibly cool job), and we hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy John’s work so much, be sure to check out his IMDB page to see all the other shows he blows stuff up in!

Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Amanda Brugel, who plays Rita Blue - one of the very first characters we fell in love with on The Handmaid’s Tale, all the way back in the pilot episode.
Sarcastic, sassy, stoic - yet also soft-hearted beneath it all - Amanda plays Rita with such depth, a paragraph will certainly not do her performance justice. Neither will half an hour - but we were just so honored Amanda took that time to share with us her beautiful personal experience with Rita. An experience that, incredibly, goes back much farther than the past ten years of making this show! Truly this was one of the most moving interviews we’ve ever conducted. If you're a Handmaid's fan, we know you’ll enjoy her story as much as we did.
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Amanda’s work so much, be sure to check her out in other shows such as Dark Matter, Pretty Hard Cases, Kim's Convenience, and many many more - take a look at her IMDB page to see them all!

Today, we continue our On Set Interview Series by speaking with Mary Arthurs, Props Master on The Handmaid’s Tale! From Gilead style dolls and macaron towers to firearms, and everything in between, Mary and her resourceful team are in charge of procuring it all. Listen in while she tells us all about how she does it - even if it means going around the globe to find the right company to make a custom casket pall for the funeral of the century. We hope you’re as fascinated as we are by this incredible woman and her very cool job!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Mary’s work so much, be sure to check out her IMDB page to see all the other shows full of her props!

Today, we continue our On Set Interview Series by speaking with Anne Richardson and Jeremy Pinard, Location Managers on The Handmaid’s Tale! This dynamic duo possesses the incredible talent of looking at your average residence or school or WALL even and seeing the magic that can unfurl on screen - and then they commence the work of persuading owners, neighbors and whole town halls in some cases, to make it happen. They’ve certainly left their mark in television history and we had the most fascinating conversation learning about how they work their magic - we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy Anne and Jeremy’s work so much, be sure to check out their IMDB pages to see all the other shows who owe their unforgettable locations to Anne and Jeremy and their teams!

Today, we have the honor of kicking off our On Set Interview Series by speaking with Emmy award winner John Weber, Executive Producer on The Handmaid’s Tale. He is also the founder, President and CEO of Take 5 Productions which co-produces not only The Handmaid’s Tale but so many other shows we know and love including Wednesday, Vikings, Star Trek and many more!
He was kind enough to take an hour out of his busy schedule to kick off our set visit with a fascinating tour of the post production department which we share a bit about at the beginning of this episode. And then he was even more generous to chat with us about his journey to the top of Toronto entertainment as well as all things Handmaid’s. He is truly the nicest man ever and we hope you enjoy this interview and the brief recap of our tour half as much as we did!
This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.
And since you enjoy John’s work so much, be sure to check out the Take 5 Productions website to see all the other shows they’ve worked hard to bring to our screens!

Today we drop the latest episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing Aunt Lydia, one of the most…unique characters in The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu, played by the incredible Ann Dowd.
We were first introduced to Lydia in the very first episode of Season 1 as the terrifying “Aunt” who had Janine’s eye removed at the first sign of an attitude from her. That made quite the first impression and she has continued to make many more memorable impressions as the show has continued through Season 5 so far.Eventually though, eccentric as it was, in some ways her repetitive behavior allowed both June and the audience to get a little bit of a handle on her motivations. In this episode we discuss those in depth. While we endeavored not to discuss The Testaments plot for the sake of those who haven’t read it, we have read it, and there are inevitable implications for her future in our discussion - so please don’t listen to this episode if you don’t want any of those! Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content weekly while we wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in another month or so for our next episode analysis - on one Luke Bankhole.
Today we drop the fourth episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing the complicated and painfully pragmatic Commander Joseph Lawrence on The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, played by one of our absolute favorite actors, Bradley Whitford. Though they’re both hilarious, Bradley’s performance is all the more astonishing when you realize in what extreme opposite realms Whitford’s own politics and persona exist from Commander Lawrence’s, despite Bradley embodying him to absolute perfection on screen.
Lawrence’s inclusion in the show came late in Season 2, but delivered a dose of eccentricity and levity that we hadn’t even realized we so desperately needed. And he’s continued to deliver that throughout the end of Season 5, keeping us laughing at his sarcastic quips despite the trauma of Gilead’s hellscape surrounding them. Join us as we discuss how Lawrence has kept us on our toes since the moment he bounded down those stairs, question his ultimate loyalties and examine his deepening relationships with all of the characters on The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu.
Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And check back soon for our next episode analysis - on another extraordinarily complicated character - Aunt Lydia!
Today we drop the third episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing the beautiful and complicated (or is she?) Serena Joy Waterford on The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu.
The show has given us so much of Serena’s story over its 5 seasons, including flashbacks from before Gilead, and even how Serena might act if given the option of a free life in Canada. We really enjoyed discussing it all, as well as the many different favorable and unfavorable traits of her character.
Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in early January for our next episode analysis - on another fan favorite, Commander Joseph Lawrence!
In the meantime, enjoy the holiday season, and if you find yourself bored, we’ll be discussing A Murder at the End of the World on our non-Handmaids podcast, “Above the Garage TV Podcast,” wherever you listen to podcasts! It’s the lil icon with us watching tv on a couch.
Today we drop the second episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing Nicholas Blaine, a controversial character to many but one of our favorites on The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu.
We got to know Nick as a driver for the Waterford’s long before he was promoted to Commander in Season 3 - and to us he’s primarily June’s friend, lover, and father to their baby Holly/Nichole. There are a lot of complications the show has thrown at him, attempting to prevent him from focusing on those roles that are most important to him, but his heart at least never seems to falter from its ride or die love for June.
Listen to our thoughts on these complications, his motivations by season, and all the aspects of this broody romantic in this episode.
Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in THREE weeks for our next episode analysis - on one Serena Joy Waterford.
Today we’re dropping our first episode of our new character analysis series! And we’re kicking it off with who else but our badass leading lady, June Osborne.
June Osborne is about a million things - wife, lover, mother, murderer, victim, rebel… the list could go on forever - like our episode - but we’ve cut it down to an hour and a half of in depth conversation on the many facets of June’s personality and we really hope you enjoy our thoughts.
Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in two weeks for our next episode analysis - on one Nicholas Blaine. He’s from Michigan.
Today we’re discussing The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. Atwood published The Testaments in 2019 to immediate critical acclaim, winning the 2019 Booker Prize, and Best Fiction Novel in the Goodreads Choice Awards. The story uses three familiar female narrators to tell the tale of the future of Gilead, with the brunt of the events being set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. In very exciting news for Handmaid's Tale fans, it was recently announced that Bruce Miller is currently adapting the novel for a new television series – well, he was, and he will continue to do so after the Writer’s Strike concludes. In the meantime, join us as we discuss the plot of the novel in great detail, as well as thoughts as to how it might weave into the current state of the events and characters in the television series. We had so many thoughts, in fact, that we decided to split the episode into two parts, so if you missed it, we suggest you listen to Part One first since we cover the plot synopsis in that segment! Next up, we will begin our series of podcast discussions on specific characters and their arcs over the 5 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date. So come back in a couple weeks for our deep dive into the fascinating and badass character of June Osborne! As always, come find us on social media where we post daily content on Instagram and Twitter...errr X.

In the meantime, join us as we discuss the plot of the novel in great detail, as well as thoughts as to how it might weave into the current state of the events and characters in the television series.
We had so many thoughts, in fact, that we decided to split the episode into two parts, so if you enjoy it, come back in two weeks for Part 2! After that we will begin our series of podcast discussions on specific characters and their arcs over the 5 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date. As always, come find us on social media where we post daily content on Instagram and Twitter...errr X.
Today we kick off our new line up of topical episodes with The Handmaid’s Tale: Differences from Book to Screen.
Margaret Atwood published The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 to immediate critical acclaim. The instant literary classic, which Margaret had initially written in longhand on yellow legal pads, won the 1985 Governor General's Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987, among many others over the years. And it’s now received the latest honor of being banned in many states!
Thirty two years later, Bruce Miller released Season One of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, also to immediate critical acclaim. In addition to its 8 Emmy wins for Season One (from 13 nominations), it became the first drama series on a streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series. It has continued to collect various award nominations over the next four seasons, and a massive fan base.
Join us as we discuss some of the most notable creative decisions and changes made by Bruce Miller and his team to adapt Margaret Atwood’s literary masterpiece into the ground breaking television show it is. And come back in two weeks for a discussion on her sequel, The Testaments, which we are thrilled to announce is already in the process of being adapted to screen by Bruce Miller. After that we will begin our series of podcast discussions on specific characters and their arcs over the 5 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date.
