The High Tech Low Life Podcast: A Cyberpunk Media Retrospective
The High Tech Low Life podcast is a review of cyberpunk media throughout the ages. Books, movies, TV, and even games and music are all on the table. The show takes a deep dive into the subject of each episode, relates it to modern life, and just for fun, gives it a rating based a number of criteria. The hosts are lifelong fans of the genre, and hope to revisit some beloved properties, and maybe shine some light on a few that slipped through the cracks.

Episode 93 - Sneakers
While it may not be very cyberpunk, Sneakers is still well worth a watch and does kinda share some vibes skirting the edges of the genre. Who doesn't like a good caper? Who doesn't like this cast? Who doesn't like watching a blind man drive a panel van full throttle over a multi-level parking lot? Cyberpunk it isn't, but a fun and well-made movie it very much is.

Episode 92 - Captain Laserhawk
What a strange bit of media Captain Laserhawk is. Basically an extended commercial for a video game company, ripping off every cyberpunk trope in the book, you might expect it to be straight garbage. Against all odds, however, it actually pulls off a fun and interesting little tale with some depressingly familiar dystopian world building. Kudos to Ubisoft, I guess!

Episode 91 - In Time
In Time has an awesome concept. What if time was literally currency? What if centuries were horded by an elite that used the market to control and subjagate the majority of the population who had to toil and stress for every hour in the day? Sounds like fertile ground for cyberpunkery! Unfortunately this story is not told very well, and the result is kind of boring and hamfisted, and certainly not helped by some of the worst performances given by actors that we usually expect much better of. In the end, 2 hours of your life watching this movie feels like you overpaid. Hopefully 2 hours of this podcast is at least fair market value, maybe not a stellar deal, you could probably do better at another podcast, but at least it isn't a waste? I'm lost in the time metaphors lets press on.

Episode 90 - Screamers
Screamers is a solid little under-the-radar, mid 90's sci fi film. It has some quality dialogue, interesting story adapted from a Phillip K Dick novella, and some surprisingly solid special effects from a time period when the effects on low budget movies were frequently less than special.

Surely it can't be that bad, right? It's just negative hype! It's just people piling on a movie that may not be great by any means, but isn't 6% Rotten Tomatoes worthy. Maybe there are some moments that make it worth the time investment. Maybe it's the critics who are wrong.
Nope! This movie is B-A-D which stands for Boring As Dick (Dick is a guy I know and he's super boring). I wish it was fun-bad but it isn't, it's just bad-bad. Best forgotten, sorry we dredged it up, this was all a mistake. Enjoy listening to us regret our choices!

Episode 83 - Short Circuit
Is it basically a children's movie from the 80's? Yes. Does it feature a white man playing an Indian character in brown face and imitating an accent? Unfortunately also yes. Does that make it a bad movie? Surprisingly... not as much as you'd think. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but we were prepared to do some heavy duty dunking on Short Circuit and ended up being kind of delighted by the whole silly affair, with some obvious big cultural asterisks in there.

Ben Affleck teams up with John Woo to make an exceptionally mediocre early 2000s techno-thriller, and we are here to talk about it. So the deal is, Affleck's character reverse-engineers tech devices, then makes something better, then has his memory of the whole experience wiped as a sort of futuristic NDA. The problem is that he takes on a job a little too big, gets in a little too deep, and then can't remember wtf happened or why people want to kill/arrest him. It sounds cooler than it is. It's fine. The movie is fine.

This week we return to true classic cyberpunk with a recap of the 1988 OVA: Appleseed. It's an interesting production that hints at a lot of the philosophical themes that cyberpunk likes to cover, but doesn't have enough time to include that junk in with all the gunfights and excessive cursing. Mute is a beautiful mess of a film. So much potential, so many misplays. If I was a sports guy I'd make an comparison to recent football games that have occurred because that last sentence really sounded like it would make a good sports analogy. Unfortunately I am unfamiliar with the lingo of the grid iron, much like Duncan Jones is unfamiliar with navigating the complicated subject of child sex abuse. The difference between us, is that I'm not going to try. He, on the other hand, swings for the fences and misses. Oh look, a sports analogy! Anyway.

This is a pretty good film about a cop who stops crimes before they happen, and whether or not that's actually pretty messed up when you think about it. Also, is it cool to keep slaves in a perpetual bath and submit them to horrific images for their entire lives? I dunno probably not. Lets not do that in our dystopian future, what do ya say?

Remember that movie from the end of the 90's where everyone wore black and the main character had almost psychic-like powers? Where few humans realized that their reality was being constructed for them by something more powerful, and they had to wake up and try to stop those creatures in their own realm? No not THAT movie, I'm talking about Dark City from 1998. A fun and weird little sci fi film that, though it definitely isn't very cyberpunk, shares many of the themes that most cyberpunk films tend to tackle.

Cyber City Oedo 808 is a 3 part Anime miniseries from 1991 and it may just be the most quotable piece of content we've covered on this show. Earmuff the kiddies because the cursing in this one is infectious, but also hilarious. Basically three 40 minute episode give us glimpses into 3 convicted criminals turned non-consensual cops as they attempt to shorten their sentences by being bounty hunters for the Cyber City PD. It's funny, it's action packed, it's old school anime.

This week we are joined by Robin AKA Nightshift Femboy to cover 1995's Tank Girl starring Lori Petty. A movie that may not be great, but is definitely not boring. If you've ever been curious what Law and Order: SVU's Ice-T looks like as a kangaroo-man, your answer lies within this film. Also within this film is an incredible 90's soundtrack. Unfortunately it also contains a lot of casual sexual harrassment which is impossible to ignore, so content warning in advance for that.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is both a good movie, and an incredibly uncomfortable movie. It's simultaneously cozy and utterly revolting. Episode 37 - Nemesis
Sometimes movies surprise you. Sometimes you're sitting down expecting to watch a pile of garbage get set on fire on the screen, and instead you watch a pile of garbage animated into a beautiful dance that you can't take your eyes off of. Nemesis is riddled with flaws, but despite them all, it's an incredibly enjoyable and fun film. Pretty cool setup, right? I know I'm intrigued! Surely this will payoff big time! Spoiler alert: They do not. Another spoiler alert: Things get really Jesusy.

Episode 31 - Burst City
In the near future, a Tokyo slum is about to be bulldozed to make way for a Nuclear Power plant. The wasted and forgotten gangs of mutants and youths that live there are the only thing that can stop local business interests and Yakuza from destroying their home. Their strongest weapon: Punk Rock.
Burst City is a proto-cyberpunk art film from 1982 that is violent, offensive, and above all, very very loud. It has been cited as inspiration from a number of western artists, and is pretty clearly an influence on the cyberpunk genre itself. Love it or hate it, you won't forget it.

Episode 19 - Virtuosity
After an Artificial Intelligence designed for a Police training simulation goes rogue, the only hope to capture him is an ex-cop turned convict named Parker Barnes, currently serving life... for murder. Sounds a lot cooler than it is. This is a very standard, somewhat boring 90's action movie with a little bit of a cyberpunk skin wrapped around it. We both remembered it with fondness, but that fondness was shot in the face upon revisiting it, much the same way Russel Crowe would shoot an activist for immigrant rights in the face for no reason.

One man takes pity on the poor condemned inmates, and by combining his love of VR video games and his knowledge of history, will take on these corrupt powers, from inside the machine. Sounds pretty cool when you write it out huh? Unfortunately that's where the coolness ends. Cyber Vengeance is a terrible straight-to-video movie from the 90's that we dug up and are here to review for the good of all mankind.

This week we watch Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into The Future, originally airing on the UK's Channel 4. Hotshot reporter Edison Carter is pursuing a story that could get his own bosses in trouble. However, an accident while on location renders him temporarily comatose, which gives the 14 year old mad scientist at his network a chance to upload his consciousness to a computer, and Max Headroom is born.

Episode 3 - Strange Days
This week we dive into the 1995's version of 1999 in the movie Strange Days directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The movie follows an ex-cop turned memory-dealer, Lenny, who is sucked into a murder cover-up when a friend gives him the recording of a high-profile black musician being executed by a cop. Lenny attempts to get to the bottom of the situation while dealing with his own demons, all while the city of L.A. is a powder keg of racial tension and end-of-the-millennium fervor. Unfortunately still relevant 28 years later.
