In 1860, Jerusalem was still a walled city. But a Jewish philanthropist from London, Moses Montefiore, funded a new neighborhood just outside the Jaffa Gate. Called Mishkenot Sha'ananim, it was a bold experiment in urban planning, public health, and philanthropy. This episode explores the conditions inside the overcrowded Old City, the role of the Ottoman authorities, the architectural decisions that shaped the neighborhood, and the resistance from the local Jewish community. We also look at how this first 'suburb' paved the way for the expansion of Jerusalem beyond its ancient walls, setting the stage for the city we know today.
