Jerusalem 1898: Kaiser Wilhelm's Visit and the Birth of Political Zionism

8 min6 juni 2026

In October 1898, German Kaiser Wilhelm II rode into Jerusalem through the Jaffa Gate, astride a white horse and wearing the uniform of a Crusader. His visit was designed to cement German influence in the Ottoman Empire, but it inadvertently gave Theodor Herzl a stage for a new kind of Jewish nationalism. Herzl, the founder of modern political Zionism, had secured a meeting with the Kaiser in Constantinople and then again in Jerusalem. He hoped to win imperial backing for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The Kaiser's public reception of Herzl outside the Jaffa Gate, witnessed by hundreds of European reporters, marked the first time a major world leader had taken Zionism seriously. Meanwhile, the German delegation pushed for the construction of the Church of the Redeemer at the Muristan, deepening Christian presence in the Old City. The visit also exposed tensions between the Old Yishuv and the new Zionist settlers, between Ottoman authorities and foreign powers, and between the Kaiser's theatrical Crusader imagery and the realities of 19th-century colonialism. This episode unpacks the six days that transformed Jerusalem into a stage for the 20th century's most consequential nationalist movement.
