Jerusalem 1898: Kaiser Wilhelm's Visit and the Birth of Political Zionism

In October 1898, German Kaiser Wilhelm II rode into Jerusalem through the Jaffa Gate, astride a white horse and wearing the uniform of a Crusader. His visit was designed to cement German influence in the Ottoman Empire, but it inadvertently gave Theodor Herzl a stage for a new kind of Jewish nationalism. Herzl, the founder of modern political Zionism, had secured a meeting with the Kaiser in Constantinople and then again in Jerusalem.
