The Armenian Quarter's Last Stand in 1948 Jerusalem

7 min30 maj 2026

In May 1948, as the British Mandate ended and Arab and Jewish forces fought for control of Jerusalem, the tiny Armenian Quarter found itself caught in the crossfire. With only a few hundred residents and a handful of armed defenders, the Armenian Patriarchate negotiated a fragile neutrality even as fighting raged at the Jaffa Gate and the New Gate. This episode tells the story of how the Armenian community — led by Patriarch Guregh II and a band of young seminarians — defended their ancient quarter, brokered cease-fires between the Haganah and Arab Legion, and ultimately saved the Cathedral of St. James from destruction. We explore the quarter's unique status within the Old City, the role of the Armenian monastery as a sanctuary for refugees of all faiths, and the forgotten deal that kept the Armenian Quarter intact while the Jewish Quarter fell. Featuring the voices of Armenian eyewitnesses, British consular reports, and the little-known figure of Kevork Papazian, who commanded the quarter's makeshift militia.
