Nepal's Secret War with Tibet and the 1856 Treaty of Thapathali

7 min29 april 2026

In 1855, Nepal's ambitious Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana launched a surprise invasion of Tibet, seeking to expand his young dynasty's prestige and extract tribute from the Dalai Lama's government. The resulting two-year conflict — fought in the high passes of the Himalayas — saw Gurkha soldiers armed with muskets face Tibetan monks and peasant levies wielding matchlocks and swords. After a series of bloody sieges at Kuti and Dzarkhok, the war ended with the Treaty of Thapathali, which forced Tibet to pay an annual indemnity and granted Nepal special trading privileges in Lhasa. This episode explores the forgotten war that cemented Rana power at home, strained Nepal's tricky relationship with Qing China, and reshaped the balance of power along the Himalayan frontier. We also delve into the role of the British East India Company, which provided weapons and advice to the Nepalese, and the Tibetan general Sho-Kang, whose desperate defense of Kyerong became legend.
