The Malla Queens of Bhaktapur Who Defied Gorkha
In this episode, we explore the overlooked role of the Malla queens of Bhaktapur during the Gorkha conquest of the Kathmandu Valley in the late 1760s. While Prithvi Narayan Shah's campaigns are well-known, the Malla queens—especially Subarna Prabha and Amar Devi—exercised real political power, commanded troops, and negotiated with enemies. We delve into how Bhaktapur's queen mother Subarna Prabha led a faction that resisted Gorkha influence, while her rival queen Amar Devi sought alliance with Prithvi Narayan Shah. Their rivalry within the Malla court weakened Bhaktapur's defenses. We also examine the famous 'Dibya Upadesh' (Divine Counsel) attributed to Prithvi Narayan Shah, which included advice on treating women of conquered kingdoms—advice he himself may not have followed. This episode sheds light on the agency of women in South Asian history, often erased from traditional narratives.
