Bootleg Punk: How Unauthorized Tapes Built an Underground Archive

This episode delves into the clandestine world of bootleg punk records—how live shows and rare demos were captured on cassette, distributed by hand‑stitched sleeves, and became essential evidence for a scene that lacked major label support. We trace the tape‑trading networks across cities, examine legal tensions with labels and artists, and uncover how these unauthorized releases kept raw punk energy circulating long before mainstream recognition. By the end, you’ll understand how bootlegs shaped community, preserved political messages, and influenced later official releases.
