D.O.A., Vancouver’s DIY Rebellion, and the Birth of ‘Hardcore ’81

This episode traces how the Canadian punk band D.O.A.—led by Joey Keithley—rose out of a tight‑knit Vancouver scene, recorded the 1981 hardcore single “Hardcore ’81,” and unleashed a touring network, fanzine culture, and a new‑found definition of what punk could be. It explores the band’s DIY recording methods, political activism, relentless road trips, and the ways that Canadian hardcore became an international force.
