From Basement Shows to Warped Tour: How Punk Festivals Grew and Changed DIY Culture

This episode follows the journey of punk’s small club roots into the massive touring festivals that carried punk across North America and Europe, including Warped Tour, Punk Rock Bowling, and Britain’s Rebellion Festival. We explore how each event grew out of DIY infrastructure—hand‑made flyers, local label partnerships, and grassroots booking networks—while negotiating the tension between staying true to punk’s anti‑institutional roots and attracting wider audiences. The discussion also looks at how festival scale reshaped the music itself, the business models behind touring, and the legacy these events have left on today’s punk scene.
