From Operation Ivy’s Ska‑Punk Spark to Rancid’s Mainstream Ride

This episode follows Tim Armstrong from his early days in California’s ska‑punk scene with Operation Ivy, through the DIY ethos that fueled their releases and tours, into the birth of Rancid. It examines the band’s formation, recording practices, label dealings (including Epitaph and Hellcat), touring strategies, and how the two projects bridged underground credibility with commercial reach while shaping East Bay punk and the broader genre.
