NYC No Wave: DNA, Teenage Jesus & the Rise of Avant‑Punk

In the mid‑1970s New York scene, bands like DNA, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks and James Chance & the Contortions erupted with a raw, experimental sound that broke free from punk’s guitar‑centric norms. This episode unpacks their DIY ethos—recording in basement studios, printing flyers on cheap paper, and pressing limited runs through Rough Trade—and examines how their music was catalogued on the seminal compilation *No New York*. It also traces how their avant‑punk aesthetic influenced later noise and post‑rock movements across the globe.
