Operation Ivy and the East Bay Ska‑Punk Explosion—From Riot to Real End

This episode dives into the rise and fall of Operation Ivy, a 1987 Berkeley trio that blended punk ferocity with ska rhythms on Lookout! Records’ ‘Energy.’ We trace their rapid ascent through 924 Gilman Street gigs, the pressures of touring, creative tensions between members, and the split in 1989—before charting how their short run seeded Rancid’s future sound. The story reveals what the band actually did, where they played, who released them, and why their breakup mattered to punk history.
