Seattle Punk Before Grunge: Hardcore Roots, DIY Routines, and the Road to Nirvana

The episode explores Seattle’s pre‑grunge punk scene from the gritty 1980s hardcore bands like the Fartz and U‑Men through their DIY record labels, all‑ages clubs, fanzines, and touring networks. It traces how limited resources, underground distribution, and a fiercely independent ethic built the infrastructure that would later support grunge’s breakout. The discussion places the music, venues, and community dynamics in context, showing how these early punk efforts shaped a city’s unique contribution to alternative rock.
