The Damned, Dave Vanian, and the Birth of Gothic Punk

We explore how The Damned’s frontman Dave Vanian fused punk rawness with macabre theatrics to create an early gothic aesthetic, examining the band’s recordings, performances, and DIY infrastructure that influenced later goth acts. The episode traces Vanian’s vocal style, stage persona, and the cultural context that turned a punk single into a template for post‑punk darkness.
