The Germs and the Chaos of Early Los Angeles Punk

The episode traces the Germs’ early Los Angeles performances at venues such as The White Elephant and The Masque, unpacking how raw stage antics, low‑budget recordings, and confrontational shows helped forge L.A.’s punk scene. By combining rehearsal anecdotes, venue context, fanzine coverage, and evolving song structures, we see the band’s chaotic energy transform into more structured songwriting before Crash’s death, while also examining how their DIY ethic influenced later Los Angeles bands.
