The Punk Producer’s Toolbox: Debunking the Bad‑Production Myth

From Martin Hannett’s echo chambers at Factory Records to Spot’s gritty four‑track mix of Black Flag, this episode traces how punk producers turned resource limits into signature sounds. We dig into techniques—room mic placement, lo‑fi tape saturation, deliberate use of analog gear—that made albums like Joy Division, the Ramones and The Stooges feel both raw and intentional. By listening to the process and context we separate myth from fact and see how punk’s DIY ethic shaped its sonic identity.
