The Specials and the Birth of ‘Ghost Town’: Britain’s Punk Protest

The episode traces how The Specials’ 1981 single "Ghost Town" turned the bleak reality of early‑80s Britain—high unemployment, racial tension and economic austerity—into a punk anthem that sparked riots and topped the UK charts. We explore the song’s ska‑inflected sound, its production under the 2 Tone label, and the way it became both a soundtrack for public anger and a flashpoint for government censorship.
