Ion Antonescu and Romania's Wartime Tragedy

This episode dives into the controversial figure of Ion Antonescu, Romania's wartime leader who allied with Nazi Germany during World War II. Lucas and Luna explore his rise to power after the abdication of King Carol II, his role in the Iron Guard's rebellion, and the disastrous decision to join Operation Barbarossa. They discuss the recapture of Bessarabia, the tragedy of the Odessa massacre, and the turning point at Stalingrad that sealed Romania's fate. The conversation also touches on Antonescu's trial and execution in 1946, and how his legacy remains deeply contested in modern Romania. Along the way, they explain the context of the Antonescu regime's antisemitic policies and the complex interplay between military ambition, political intrigue, and national identity. For listeners who have followed the series from the Phanariotes to King Carol, this episode fills a crucial gap in understanding Romania's 20th-century ordeal.
