King Carol I and the Demolition of the Cetatea Neamțului Fortress
Om avsnittet
In 1849, during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the Habsburg army besieged the medieval fortress of Cetatea Neamțului in Moldavia. But this episode isn't about the siege itself—it's about what happened afterward. In 1866, a newly arrived German prince on the Romanian throne, Carol I, ordered the systematic demolition of the fortress. Why would a monarch destroy a symbol of medieval defiance against Ottoman and Hungarian incursions? The answer lies in Carol's strategic calculations: the fortress was obsolete against modern artillery, but more importantly, its destruction served as a political message to the conservative boyars who still dreamed of restoring the old principalities' autonomy. The demolition of Cetatea Neamțului became a turning point in the consolidation of Romania's modern state under a foreign dynasty. We explore the fortress's history from its construction under Petru I Mușat in the 14th century, its role in the defense against the Ottoman Empire, and its final destruction. Along the way, we discuss the role of the military engineer Ioan Ionescu de la Brad, the controversy among Romanian intellectuals, and how Carol's decision ultimately paved the way for a unified national army loyal to the crown.
