Romania's Forgotten Queen: Marie's Wartime Triumph

She was born a British princess, married a Hohenzollern, and became the heart of Romania during its darkest hours. This episode of The History of Romania follows Queen Marie through the First World War — from the shock of neutrality to the desperate retreat into Moldavia, from the Russian Revolution to the Treaty of Bucharest, and finally to her triumphant return to a Greater Romania at the Paris Peace Conference. We look at how a woman with no official power became a symbol of national resilience, her rivalry with the brash politician Ion I.C. Brătianu, her affair with the dashing Prince Știrbey, and her hand in convincing the Allies that Romania deserved its place at the table. Along the way, we meet the wounded soldiers she nursed, the peasants who charmed her, and the young King Michael she carried in her arms at his baptism in 1922. This is the story of a queen who smuggled war plans in her handbag, wore a nurse's uniform when it mattered, and helped stitch together the borders of modern Romania.
