Romania's Iron Guard: Fascism, Faith, and the Legionary Movement
Om avsnittet
In the 1920s and 1930s, Romania saw the rise of a uniquely Orthodox Christian fascist movement: the Iron Guard, or Legion of the Archangel Michael. Founded by Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, it blended religious mysticism, anti-Semitism, and anti-corruption fervor. This episode explores Codreanu's early life, the movement's rituals (including 'nest' cells and blood oaths), its assassination of Prime Minister Ion Duca, King Carol II's brutal crackdown, and Codreanu's execution in 1938. We also discuss the Guard's brief return to power under Horia Sima during the National Legionary State, and its eventual suppression by Ion Antonescu and the Germans. A dark chapter in Romania's interwar history, the Iron Guard reveals how political violence and religious nationalism merged in the shadow of World War II.
