The Aromanians: A Balkan Romance Diaspora

Om avsnittet

Who are the Aromanians? A scattered Romance-speaking people of the Balkans, often called Vlachs, with roots in the Romanized Thracians and a civilization that produced merchants, scholars, and revolutionaries. In this episode, Lucas and Luna trace their journey from the mountains of Epirus and the Pindus to the printing presses of Moscopole, the Ottoman millet system, and the diaspora that spread them from Bucharest to Bitola, from Thessaloniki to New York. Along the way they meet Apostol Mărgărit, the teacher who tried to unite them; the Megleno-Romanians and Istro-Romanians, tiny kin-groups clinging to their language; and the Zinzars, as they're known in Romanian. They explore how these 'Kutso-Vlachs' navigated Greek, Romanian, and Ottoman worlds, how the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest reshaped their fate, and how a forgotten Enlightenment city in the Pindus became a beacon of learning. A story of survival, assimilation, and a living heritage still spoken today.
