The Battle of Văcărești and the Rise of Romanian Folklore

While Bran Castle and Vlad the Impaler dominate popular imagination, the true genesis of Romania’s national identity lies in the complex interplay between Ottoman suzerainty and local princely ambition during the long reign of Prince Alexandru the Good. This episode explores how medieval Wallachian chronicles, particularly those by Radu Popescu, constructed a narrative of moral resistance against imperial overreach that resonated centuries later. We examine the political maneuvering of the Phanariot era, the role of the Divan in mediating between Constantinople and Bucharest, and how the literary tradition of letopisețe preserved collective memory through allegory rather than direct reportage. The conversation also touches on the architectural legacy of the Brâncoveanu style, which blended Byzantine aesthetics with Western European influences, creating a distinct visual language for Orthodox monasticism. By focusing on the court of Constantin Brâncoveanu and his tragic end at the hands of the Sublime Porte, we uncover how artistic patronage became a form of soft power and cultural preservation. Listeners will learn about the specific diplomatic tensions that led to the execution of the prince, the subsequent crackdown on intellectual life, and how these events shaped the romantic nationalism of the nineteenth century. Through the lens of primary sources like the Pelican Codex and the works of Miron Costin, we reconstruct a picture of a society navigating survival through culture, law, and careful diplomacy.
