The Dacian Priesthood: Religion and Resistance Before Rome
Om avsnittet
Before the Dacian Wars and the Roman conquest, the Carpathian mountains were home to a sophisticated priestly caste that shaped Dacian society. This episode explores the role of the 'deceneus' — high priest and advisor to King Burebista — and how religious authority intertwined with political power. We discuss the legendary figure Zalmoxis, the cult of the immortal god, and the mysterious 'kapnobatai' (cloud-walkers) who used smoke-induced trances. How did Dacian religious practices unify tribes against Roman expansion? And what happened to the priesthood after Trajan's victory? Drawing on Herodotus, Strabo, and modern archaeology at Sarmizegetusa Regia, we separate myth from history and reveal a spiritual system that was as formidable as the Dacian falx.
