The Forgotten Architect: Miron Costin and Romanian Chronicle Writing

In this episode of The History of Romania, Lucas and Luna explore the life and work of Miron Costin, a 17th-century Moldavian chronicler whose writing shaped Romanian historical consciousness. Costin, a boyar and diplomat, wrote 'Letopisețul Țării Moldovei' (The Chronicle of Moldavia) and the poem 'Viața lumii' (The Life of the World), blending vivid narrative with political insight. His account of the Battle of Cecora (1620) and his analysis of Moldavia's struggles between the Ottoman Empire and Poland-Lithuania offer a window into a turbulent era. The episode also touches on his tragic execution in 1691, caught in the power struggles of the Cantacuzino family. Costin's legacy as a precursor to modern Romanian historiography is examined, including his use of Latin script and his defense of Romanian continuity in Dacia. Listeners will gain a deeper appreciation for how chroniclers like Costin preserved national memory before the age of print.
