The Iron Guard: Romania's Fascist Twilight

In this episode of The History of Romania, Lucas and Luna explore the rise and fall of the Iron Guard, the ultra-nationalist, mystical movement that convulsed Romania in the 1930s and 1940s. From Corneliu Zelea Codreanu's charismatic leadership to the Legionary Movement's blend of Orthodox Christianity and revolutionary violence, we trace how the Guard grew from a fringe student group into a political force that briefly shared power with Ion Antonescu before self-destructing in the January 1941 rebellion. We visit the assassination of Prime Minister I.G. Duca, the chilling 'Legionary death squads', the murder of Nicolae Iorga, and the 'Night of the Vampires' when rival factions purged each other. The episode also considers the movement's intellectual contradictions—its antisemitism, its anti-capitalist rhetoric, its strange fascination with death—and its ultimate legacy in Romanian memory. Rich with names, dates, and telling details, this is a nuanced look at a dark chapter that still shapes Romania's political imagination.
