The Night Attack: Vlad the Impaler's 1462 Raid
Om avsnittet
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore one of the most daring military maneuvers in medieval history: Vlad the Impaler's night attack on the Ottoman army in June 1462. They discuss the context of Vlad's campaign against Mehmed II, the strategic importance of the Târgoviște raid, the use of scorched earth tactics, and the controversial aftermath. The episode examines primary sources like the chronicles of Laonikos Chalkokondyles and the Byzantine historian Kritovoulos, and pieces together the tactical decisions that made the night raid a legendary stand. Lucas also shares insights into Vlad's use of forests, decoys, and the psychological warfare of impaled corpses. The conversation touches on the legacy of the raid in Romanian national consciousness and its place in the broader history of the Ottoman–Romanian conflicts.
