The Peasant Uprising That Shook Romania
Om avsnittet
In 1821, a small group of Greek irregulars led by Alexander Ypsilantis marched into Wallachia, hoping to ignite a pan-Hellenic revolt against the Ottoman Empire. They expected support from the local boyars and the peasantry, but instead found hostility and betrayal. This episode explores the Târgoviște Massacre, where Ypsilantis ordered the execution of prominent Romanian nobles who refused to join his cause. We examine how this catastrophic miscalculation alienated the Romanian population, fueled resentment against Phanariot rule, and inadvertently strengthened the case for greater national autonomy. Through the eyes of figures like Scarlat Callimachi and the suffering peasants of the region, we see how a failed foreign intervention became a pivotal moment in the birth of Romanian nationalism.
