The Romanian Orthodox Church Under Communism: Cross and Crescent
Om avsnittet
When the Romanian Communist Party came to power in 1947, it inherited a nation deeply rooted in Orthodox Christianity. This episode explores the uneasy alliance between the state and the Romanian Orthodox Church, from the 1948 Religious Cult Law that subordinated the church to state control, to the secret collaboration of Patriarch Justinian Marina with the Securitate. We examine how the regime used the church as a tool for nationalist propaganda, the suppression of the Greek Catholic Church, and the ironic survival of religious practice through figures like Father Gheorghe Calciu-Dumitreasa. Drawing on declassified Securitate archives, we reveal the moral compromises and quiet resistance that defined Romanian Orthodoxy under Ceaușescu. A story of faith, power, and survival in an atheist state.
