The Sultans of Lahej: Coastal Resistance and British Retreat

While Lucas and Luna trace the history of Yemen, they have already explored the highland Imamate, the Rasulid scholarship, and the British colonial presence in Aden. But there is another story written along the coast—one of independent sultanates that navigated the treacherous waters of imperial politics. In this episode, we focus on the Sultanate of Lahej and its ruler, Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah. For decades, these coastal rulers played a complex game of diplomacy against the British Empire, maintaining a fragile sovereignty while the Federation of South Arabia crumbled around them. We look at how the Bani Jabir tribe leveraged their control over the Bab-el-Mandeb strait to resist full absorption into the protectorate system. This is a story of maritime defense, treaty negotiations, and the quiet dignity of a people who refused to be erased by empire. Join us as we uncover the specific strategies used by Lahej’s leaders during the final years of British influence in the region.
