The Story You Are Not Supposed to Tell: Kuchisake-onna

Kuchisake-onna, the Slit-Mouthed Woman, is one of Japan’s most terrifying and enduring urban legends. According to the story, a masked woman approaches unsuspecting victims and asks a deceptively simple question: “Am I beautiful?” The answer may determine whether they escape or discover the horrifying face hidden beneath her mask. In this episode of The House of Strange, we explore the legend of Kuchisake-onna, its possible origins in Japanese folklore, and the fear that swept across Japan as stories of the Slit-Mouthed Woman spread through schools, neighborhoods, and whispered rumors. From older tales that may have influenced the legend to the panic surrounding Kuchisake-onna in the late 1970s, we trace how repetition transformed a frightening story into a cultural phenomenon, and why some legends become more powerful every time someone dares to tell them.
