Those Who Leave Do Not Return: The Qivittoq

In Greenlandic folklore, the qivittoq is someone who leaves their community behind and disappears into the wilderness, crossing a boundary between exile and something more supernatural. In Inuit tradition, these figures were not simply wanderers. Isolation could transform them, and some stories describe qivittut gaining extraordinary abilities as they became increasingly removed from human society.

In this episode of The House of Strange, we explore the folklore of the qivittoq through oral tradition, historical accounts, and the cultural importance of community in Greenland. We examine why someone might choose or be forced into exile, how stories transformed those who vanished into the wilderness, and what the qivittoq reveals about isolation, identity, belonging, and survival.

To leave was one thing. To become qivittoq meant crossing a threshold from which returning might no longer be possible.
