I was lucky enough to hear an advance copy of Shame’s forthcoming third album, Food For Worms, last week. It’s not on general release until February 24th, 2023, and when it is it’ll be on the Dead Oceans label, but such is it’s brilliance – no hype, it is incredible - I thought I’d give singer Charlie Steen a shout to talk a little more about it.
And an illuminating chat it was – about working with Phoebe Bridgers, body image, prescription drugs, and, if nothing else, I now know where to head to in Brixton if I’m craving, as I find I nearly always am, jerk chicken. The audio is a bit scratchier than usual - Charlie is on his phone - but then, this is a place of rock ‘n’ roll, not a nunnery. Consider this a teaser for 2023’s first great rock album, today.
Enjoy the episode you guys…
[Unsurprisingly, my 2021 podcast series Shame gets a few nods on the episode. If you've never heard my episodic exploration of the emotion shame, and you'd like to, head to this episode here, and just keep playing for the next 15 episodes!]
