Late last year, Greg Gilbert, the singer – and what a singer he was - in Delays, one of the very best bands of the 00’s and a group with one of the most transcendent of catalogues, lost his battle with cancer. He was just 44 years old. The word tragedy gets used a bit too flippantly I think, but I have no problem in using it here.
Too young. Too soon. Too much still to do. Not so much a death, as a mugging of mortality. I’ve gotta tell you, I loved that band.
Early next year, on January 27th, the band’s record label Rough Trade, are reissuing – for the first time ever – the Southampton band’s classic 2004 debut Faded Seaside Glamour, on vinyl. I’m both gracious and flattered that Greg’s brother Aaron – who both sang and played keyboards in Delays – found time to speak to me about that re-release, about his brother, his legacy, which I think we both agree will only grow and grow, and of course, about death, grief and being left behind.
