Episode 86: Ian Black, Slug

33 min • 25 november 2022

It’s surprising to me that as this podcast races towards a hundred episodes, I haven’t yet involved anyone from the incredibly fertile, really quite unique north east music scene, that I was involved in twenty or so years ago.

I’m happy to break that duck by talking to one Ian Black, main-man in Sunderland’s Slug, one of the most brilliantly eccentric groups around, and one currently preparing the release of Ian’s third record, Thy Socialite!, on January 20th, via Dayight Saving Records, the new imprint set up by another of Wearside's most noted acts, Field Music. Because I know Ian pretty well, this conversation does get a little colloquial in places, but I’ve done my best to quantify people and references which might not be well known to anyone who didn’t grow up in the aforementioned music scene.

I think what transpires is a decent portrait of a uniquely talented songwriter and performer. I hope you enjoy it, and when you’ve done, meet me in the Ivy for a pint?
