This week on The Mother Daze, we’re joined by a repeat guest, our friend, Daniel Ahearn! Dan is the author of The Way Back Home, a father of two and an attachment-focused family therapist. Daniel’s work is all about helping parents and teens stay connected through the beautiful, messy and sometimes completely bewildering years of adolescence.
And you better believe we came armed with ALL our burning questions about raising teenagers!!!
At the heart of Daniel’s book is an attachment-based approach to parenting and one beautifully simple idea we LOVE: connection over correction. Sounds dreamy yasss… but HOW do we actually do that in the thick of teen life?!
We talk repairing after conflict, holding boundaries without blowing up the connection, natural consequences, and why sometimes we need to stop correcting for a hot sec and connect with what’s actually underneath the behaviour.
Then we get into alllll the things. How much is too much to share about our own (sometimes rather colourful ) pasts? How do we talk about drugs and alcohol without making it weird or terrifying? Mental health days, losing them to their peer group, loosening the reins (gulp!) and building the kind of relationship where, when the messy stuff happens, they actually WANT to come to us.
