Season 1 Episode 3 of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale - "Late"
This episode couldn't be titled any better. Not only is June's period late but we see through the flashbacks that June is late in understanding that Gilead has taken over.
2:45 - We finally acknowledge that we dropped our original lighting theory because we've had some communication with Bruce Miller, The Handmaid's Tale creator.
5:50 - We're drinking Domain Tempier Bandol Rose. The primary varietal is mourvedre, one of the latest ripening grapes, which is appropriate for an episode titled "Late"
14:50 - Right out of the gate we see where Ofglen has taken
19:19 - Prisoners wear pants? We debate why Gilead is okay with this
21:28 - June is walking with Ofglen 2.0 and we learn from the monologue that June was late to waking up to what was happening in her country
25:30 - It's the first flashback on the episode and we see June and Moria out for a run - oh, the horror. And we get the fateful coffee shop interaction with the worlds worst barista
38:00 - We tip our hats to the makeup team. The difference in June's appearance in the flashback highlights the toll that Gilead has taken
43:57 - June's flashback shifts to later in the day and she's on hold with the bank as armed guards enter her work place
56:15 - Back in present day Gilead, Offred is bringing home the groceries - and it's a scene shot in one take
57:40 - Rita is surprisingly chipper - and it's setting off alarm bells
1:05:53 - Rita finally clues Offred in as to what all the fuss is about - she's late. Serena comes barging in and begins to interrogate
1:17:13 - Serena brings June on a play date to the Putnam's and Serena figures out too late that this wasn't a great idea
1:28:98 - Naomi enters with the perfect line - excellent writing! "I'm sure you're all starving" and that's exactly what all these women are experiencing
1:32:17 - Whether June teleports or not, she ends up in Janine's room
1:42:48 - Serena ask June if she had any fun...was this supposed to be fun Serena?
1:51:19 - Serena sends June back home with Nick and he is trying to send her a message but there's no context to his advice
1:53:53 - The conversation with Nick transitions into a flashback of June, Luke, and Moira trying to make sense of the fact that women in the United States have just lost many of their rights overnight.
