The 1982 Malvinas War and Argentina's Identity

On this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Falklands War, known in Argentina as the Guerra de las Malvinas. We look at the political miscalculations of General Leopoldo Galtieri and the Junta Militar that led to the invasion in April 1982. The conversation details the harsh reality of the conflict on the ground, from the freezing conditions of Goose Green to the naval blockade enforced by HMS Endurance. We examine how the loss of the war didn't just end a military campaign but shattered the dictatorship’s legitimacy, paving the way for Raúl Alfonsín’s election and the trial of the junta leaders. Through specific accounts of soldiers like those in the 5th Regiment of Infantry, we understand how this brief but intense conflict became a defining trauma for modern Argentina, reshaping national identity and civil-military relations forever.
