The Great Famine of Mount Lebanon 1863
Om avsnittet
In 1863, a perfect storm of drought, locusts, and Ottoman taxation turned the fertile valleys of Mount Lebanon into a landscape of starvation. This episode explores the Great Famine that killed roughly one-third of the population, focusing on the desperate measures taken by communities like the Qadisha Valley and the Chouf District to survive. We examine how the crisis exposed the fragility of the Double Qaimaqamate system, forced refugees to flee to Beirut and Damascus, and ultimately accelerated the political reforms known as the Règlement Organique. Through the eyes of survivors who ate bark and boiled leather, we understand how this humanitarian disaster reshaped the social fabric of the region and paved the way for the Mutasarrifiyya.
