Kedah's 1821 Fall: Siamese Conquest of a Malay Kingdom
Long before Kedah became a rice bowl, it was a sovereign sultanate caught between Siamese overlordship and British commercial ambition. In 1821, the Siamese army under Chao Phraya Nakhon Noi marched south, sacking Alor Setar and forcing Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Shah II into exile. This episode traces the events leading up to the invasion—Kedah's refusal to send the Bunga Mas tribute, the sultan's secret negotiations with the British in Penang, and the brutal sack of the capital. We also explore the aftermath: the sultan's twelve-year exile in British territory, Siamese rule over Kedah until the 1839 Treaty of Bangkok, and the lasting scars on Malay-Siamese relations. Featuring the role of the Penang government under Robert Fullerton, the Kedah resistance led by Tunku Kudin, and the eventual restoration that came at the price of Siamese suzerainty.
