The 1831 Naning War: Aborigines, Coffee and Colonial Overreach

In 1831, the British in Malacca declared war on a tiny inland chiefdom called Naning — over coffee, sovereignty, and a stubborn headman named Dol Said. What began as a dispute over a tenth of a harvest escalated into a two-year guerrilla conflict that embarrassed the East India Company, nearly bankrupted the settlement, and forced London to redefine the limits of colonial expansion in the peninsula. This episode reconstructs the Naning War from both sides: the British obsession with legal precedent versus the local tradition of Malay-Batin autonomy, the role of the Orang Asli as scouts and fighters, and the strategic blunders that turned a 'punitive expedition' into a lesson in humility.
