The 1855 Dindings Purchase: Perak's Lost Coast and British Greed

In 1855, the British bought a strip of Perak's coast called the Dindings — a tiny territory they wanted for a naval base and trading port. The purchase was brokered by the Straits Settlements governor, Sir William John Butterworth, and signed off by Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah II of Perak — the same sultan who would later be implicated in the murder of J.W.W.
