In 1871, Penang's George Town erupted in violence as rival Chinese secret societies battled for control of the lucrative opium and spirit farms. The Straits Settlements government, caught off guard, responded with a harsh crackdown that reshaped colonial policy. This episode explores the 1871 Penang Riots through the figures of Kapitan Cina Khoo Thean Teik, the Ghee Hin and Toh Peh Kong societies, and acting Governor Edward Anson.
