The Jementah Civil War: Johor's Last Stand Against Colonial Rule

In 1879, the small Johor district of Jementah became the stage for a brutal civil war that pitted the Temenggong of Johor, Abu Bakar, against a coalition of Malay chiefs and Chinese miners led by Dato' Bentara Luar, Muhammad Salleh. This episode unpacks the conflict's roots in Johor's kangchu system, the role of the Malay secret society Ngee Heng, and the British colonial pressure that forced Abu Bakar to modernise his state. We follow the siege of Jementah fort, the betrayal of the Johor military commandant Dato' Seri Maharaja, and the eventual exile of Muhammad Salleh to Singapore. The war marked a turning point: Johor's last armed resistance to British influence, and the beginning of Abu Bakar's consolidation of power under the 1885 Anglo-Johor Treaty. We also explore the forgotten figure of Haji Abdul Rahman, a religious leader who rallied fighters with the cry of jihad. Through letters, colonial reports, and local accounts, we reconstruct this little-known conflict that shaped modern Johor's borders and identity.
