The Kesatuan Melayu Muda: Malaysia's Forgotten Nationalists

6 min1 maj 2026

Long before Merdeka, a small group of Malay intellectuals dared to dream of a nation free from colonial rule. This episode tells the story of the Kesatuan Melayu Muda (KMM) — the Young Malay Union — founded in 1937 by Ibrahim Yaacob and Ishak Haji Muhammad. Inspired by Indonesian nationalism and the wider anti-colonial ferment, they called for 'Melayu Raya' (Greater Malaya), a union with Indonesia. British authorities viewed them as subversive; their members were arrested and exiled during World War II. We explore the KMM's radical newspaper, its links to the Japanese, and its legacy as the seedbed for later Malay nationalism. Figures like Ibrahim Yaacob, Ishak Haji Muhammad, and Ahmad Boestamam come to life, alongside the tension between the KMM's leftist vision and the conservative Malay aristocracy. This is the untold prequel to Malaysia's independence story.
