The Padri War: Islam, Adat and Colonialism in 19th Century Minangkabau
Long before British intervention in the Malay states, a brutal civil war tore through the Minangkabau highlands of Sumatra. The Padri War (1803–1838) pitted Islamic reformers against traditional matrilineal adat chiefs, drawing in the Dutch colonial army and reshaping the political and religious landscape of the region.
