The Sandakan Death Marches: Australia's Darkest WWII Ordeal in Borneo
During World War II, the Japanese occupied British North Borneo and forced thousands of Allied prisoners of war and local labourers to construct a military airstrip in Sandakan. By 1945, as Allied forces closed in, the Japanese marched the surviving POWs—mostly Australian—260 kilometres inland through the Borneo jungle to Ranau. Of the 2,434 prisoners sent from Sandakan, only six Australians survived by escaping. The rest perished from starvation, disease, beatings, or were executed.
