Babur's Lost Love: The Story of Ma'suma Begum

After Babur finally conquered Samarkand in 1497 — a city he'd dreamed of ruling since childhood — he held it for barely a hundred days before his brothers and enemies drove him out. But in the midst of that brief triumph, something else happened that would haunt him for the rest of his life: he met and married Ma'suma Begum, a cousin from the Timurid line. Their marriage was short, their separation sudden, and her story — preserved in Babur's own memoirs, the Baburnama — reveals a side of the Timurid world we rarely see: the lives of women in royal households. This episode follows Ma'suma from her wedding in the besieged citadel of Samarkand to her lonely years in Kabul, where Babur returned to her after losing his kingdom.
